Let’s get Back to the Future

What does 2030 look like?

Undoubtedly, these are difficult times, but incredibly this is a time where technology entrepreneurs are promising the next leap forward. This is evident by the paradox of experiencing a global pandemic while also witnessing a private space company successfully deliver humans to the International Space Station for the first time in history. These are the worst of times and these are the best of times.

The way we move through these obstacles and the quality of decisions people choose today will determine if the next generation of aeronautical technology can create a new era of mobility. To not venture onward is a retreat to the past where fossil based energy, economic stagnation, and psychological gridlock, and century old corporations dictate our future.

The most successful gaming engine in the world is powering augmented reality companies to revolutionize flight training for the military.

Radical events that transpired within the last year have broken the status quo. The venture capital community has lined up behind the flying car industry while some automobile manufacturers are hedging their bets on electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and even the creation of their own aerial vehicles. Entrepreneurs that have more in common with Marvel superheroes have created not one, but three jetpack companies. The most successful gaming engine in the world is powering augmented reality companies to revolutionize flight training for the military. The US Air Force has launched a special program to accelerate flying cars and US Air Force Secretary, Barbara Barrett, launched the first space focused branch of any military, the US Space Force. The progress made within the last decade, with the culmination of that progress rearing its head over the past year, to launch the Future of Mobility is not only irreversible but unstoppable.

So, what does 2030 really look like?

At its core, this depends on the funding mechanisms to build new products, on which consumers will be voting with their wallet, and if companies can capture enough value to continue innovating. Fund, Build, Fly, should be the mantra if we want to elevate society from a ground based civilization to an air based civilization. In 2030, humans will be an air based civilization, with the caveat that we must move beyond our current unsustainable paradigm to achieve the full spectrum of mobility.

In 2020, the future of the Mobility Industry is your future. Unless you live under a rock, you will be affected by the mobility industry. It’s yours to fund, yours to build, yours to pilot, yours to evangelize, and yours to cherish. Without you there’s no future of anything, so decide what part of the future you want to build and make it. Commercializing the aerospace industry to solve the last mile of transportation is the final mobility frontier still left on this planet.

Now is the time to build the Future of Mobility. Start, join, or fund a company in this space, and let’s get back to the future.
